MSC Katya R. Sets Record as Largest Container Ship to Boost Costa Rican Export Links to Europe

13/06/2019

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company, a global leader in transportation and logistics, is improving trade links between Costa Rica and northern Europe by adding a new direct call from the Port of Moin.

On 16 June MSC Katya R. will be the largest vessel to call Moin Terminal in Costa Rica, launching a new era in cargo shipping for the port and for exporters using its facilities. MSC’s service will bring larger container ships with more capacity to carry refrigerated produce on transatlantic routes to European and Asian markets.

MSC Katya R. will operate on the company’s Ecuador Service, a direct weekly service from Moin to key ports in norther Europe, the region known in the maritime transportation business as North West Continent or NWC. The direct ports of call from Moin are: Antwerp, Rotterdam and Bremerhaven with connections to destinations throughout Europe.

Among the beneficiaries of this new service will be Costa Rican companies which export food and other commodities in containers. Costa Rica is the world 's largest exporter of pineapples and the third largest exporter of bananas.

Much of Costa Rica’s exports of agricultural products are temperature controlled; and are increasingly moving in refrigerated containers called “reefers” as opposed to being transported by dedicated refrigerated vessels. MSC is responding to these trends by providing advanced reefer technology that is required by our partners and shippers to ensure the product reaches on time to its destination in perfect condition.
